WEF Names CATL Yibin Facility World’s First Battery Sector Sustainability Lighthouse
Davos, Switzerland – The World Economic Forum (WEF) has inducted CATL’s Yibin manufacturing plant in Sichuan, China, into its Global Lighthouse Network (GLN) as a certified Sustainability Lighthouse. This landmark milestone makes the site the first lithium-ion battery facility globally to earn this dedicated sustainability distinction.
Previously named a GLN Lighthouse for operational productivity in 2022, the Yibin site is now the only battery industry facility worldwide to hold dual GLN certifications for both manufacturing excellence and sustainable production. This award validates the plant’s industry-leading reductions in energy use, emissions, and waste, with the WEF highlighting its advanced tech solutions to advance full net-zero and circular economy goals. CATL now operates four GLN-certified sites, the most of any lithium battery manufacturer globally.
WEF Evaluation: Solving Scaling Challenges With Low-Carbon Innovation
In its assessment, the WEF noted unique hurdles for the world’s largest battery production site: rapid capacity expansion brings inherent risks of rising carbon emissions, high energy consumption, growing supply chain footprints, and escalating manufacturing costs. To address these, the Yibin plant integrated AI-driven energy management, on-site micro-grid PV storage, and low-carbon R&D. These efforts delivered a 56% reduction in the site’s total carbon footprint, and supported 13 upstream suppliers in achieving carbon neutrality certifications.

The plant targets systemic industry barriers via two core intelligent manufacturing frameworks:
AI-Optimized Equipment Efficiency: Machine learning is deployed across core production lines to cut energy waste. Real-time data analytics predicts demand to eliminate redundant standby runtime, while intelligent coating line controls dynamically adjust airflow and fan frequency to maximize efficiency without compromising quality.
Closed-Loop Packaging Circularity: The site scaled full packaging circularity to reduce material use. For domestic operations, reusable racks are managed via IIoT-enabled lifecycle scheduling. For global logistics, advanced simulation created lightweight packaging that minimizes environmental impact while meeting strict international transport standards.
